This month, Atrium Music in Los Angeles, has signed the disc, Gypsy Swing All-Stars: “Les Nouveaux Bohemiens,” to their musical roster for licensing representation. The ten original songs on the disc, composed, and co-produced by Marti Amado and Josquin des Pres, and arranged by Amado, feature instrumental performances by some of the top jazz and Gypsy Swing players in the country. Musicians featured include John Jorgenson on guitars and clarinet, Charlie Bisharat on violin, Bob Magnusson on upright bass, Paul Kimbarrow on drums and Sharon Whyte on accordion.
Atrium Music places music in such television shows as: The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Extreme Makeover, Southern Nights and Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade. Atrium principals Josh Young and Stephen Cohen were both enthusiastic about acquiring and pitching the songs on “Les Nouveaux Bohemiens.” Says Cohen, “My uncle was a Gypsy Jazz guitarist and got me into the music of Django Reinhardt when I was a teenager,” he says. “These songs and recordings sound amazing and Josh and I are both excited be able to work with them,” he adds.
Gypsy Swing is a vibrant meeting of American hot jazz and Gypsy melody which originated in 1930s France. “Les Nouveaux Bohemiens” is a tribute to the timeless music of the legendary pre-World War II group, the Quintette du Hot Club de France. Co-founded by guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli, the Hot Club Quintette is credited with defining and popularizing Gypsy swing (or Gypsy jazz, as it is sometimes called). At once easy to listen to and difficult to play, sophisticated yet spontaneous, Gypsy swing rapidly developed a strong and enthusiastic following, first in France, then among jazz fans worldwide. Traditional as 1935, yet as current as today, the music of Le Hot Club lives on.
Composed and produced by: Marti Amado (Beanstalk Rising/BMI) and Josquin des Pres (Track Star Polyphonix / BMI).
Guitars and Clarinets: John Jorgenson (Hellecasters, Elton John), Violin: Charlie Bisharat (Shadowfax), Upright Bass: Bob Magnusson (Sarah Vaughn, Linda Ronstadt), Drums Paul Kimbarrow (AJ Croce), Accordion: Sharon Whyte (Eve Selis Band).
